Beads have a long history in fashion and trade. These simple perforated spheres made from different materials such as animal teeth and seeds, date as far back as the Palaeolithic period.
Besides being a fashion accessory, some groups of people believe that beads possess a magical quality that encourages fertility, while others use them for religious purposes. In many African tribes, beads are an important symbol of identity and are given as gifts to express romantic interest.
In modern times, beads have also been used in embroidery, decoration of household objects, creating ornaments and in numerous fashion items such as bags, shoes, hats and belts; in different colours, shapes and sizes.
